Holiday Haus Room Styling Guide

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

The holiday season may be the merriest time of the year, but with Christmas shopping, corporate parties and festive family events, it can also be overwhelmingly busy. So when it comes to styling my home for the holidays, the goal is always a festive look that’s as effortless as it is beautiful.

To simplify the design process, I aim for a multi-layered holiday look that can be easily adapted for a seamless post-Christmas transition. Beginning with a natural base of garland, leaves, and winter foliage, I create a seasonal foundation on which to build the rest of my holiday look. With the design foundation in place, I incorporate festive accessories and Christmas-specific design elements to play up those magical holiday vibes. And when the holidays are over, I simply remove the Christmas accessories, and am left with a cozy cabin vibe to see me through the cold winter months. This effortless design strategy is a great way to simplify your life and to slowly release the holidays as you enter into the New Year.

As the first place you (and your guests!) see when you enter your home, your entryway makes a significant impression and sets the tone for your holiday gatherings. Go big and make a statement, or keep it subtle, allowing the holiday spirit to build as you move through the home.

To highlight the natural element of the holiday, incorporate small trees in the foyer or hang garland around a centerpiece mirror. For a festive entryway focal point, try a vignette with an arrangement of Christmas décor including candles, organic elements, and a vase filled with holly. Natural, calming shades of green combined with lustrous mixed metals make for an understated yet elegant display.

The holidays tend to be the only time of year when the staircase is awarded a personality, and I love to take full advantage! To define the staircase in alignment with the entryway, begin with a base of garland and add festive accents like fairy lights, Christmas ornaments, and eye-catching ribbon.

To help define your holiday design personality, choose ribbon in a color and thickness that compliments your taste and personal style. Neutral shades like cream are a classic and calming choice, while a bold dash of red makes a dramatic – and fun! – statement. For a little holiday glitz and glamour, incorporate gold accents such as balls, bells, and other ornaments.

One of the coziest places in your home, your living room is the perfect setting for effortless Christmas décor. Add some holiday love to your coffee tables, end tables, and mantel with festive tea lights, candlesticks, mini trees, wreaths, and even bowls filled with Christmas ornaments.

Knit stockings, cozy blankets and festive throw pillows add texture and softness, while natural elements like trees, wreaths and garland bring the outside in. For a comfortable and inviting space, balance winter greenery with warm tones like brown, gold, and copper.

A striking centerpiece in any room, your fireplace mantel is the perfect place for a dramatic and eye-catching Christmas display. For a lush and natural base, start with artfully draped garland and miniature pine trees. Decorative trees come in in many styles and forms, so choose a tree that fits your personal preference. Wood trees can complement both minimalistic and rustic looks, while structural or textured trees provide more visual interest. For a whimsical finishing touch that adds depth and dimension, incorporate twinkling white Christmas lights or a shimmering, light-reflecting ornament garland.

The kitchen is the heart of the home but is sometimes overlooked when it comes to holiday décor. To draw the Christmas spirit into the room, hang garland above the sink, door frames, and cabinets for a natural, wintery touch. For an especially festive vibe, adorn your cabinets with natural wreaths complete with colorful ribbon, metallic ornaments, and other festive details.

To emphasize the holiday aesthetic, incorporate traditional Christmas décor throughout the room with playful touches like reindeer, village houses, and of course Santa Claus himself! For an easily adaptable finishing touch, fill a vase with interchangeable holiday flowers.

As the backdrop for the traditional Christmas feast, the dining room may be the most important room in your home when it comes to holiday décor. Many clients enjoy a festive but functional everyday base that can be easily elevated for more formal events.

Begin by hanging wreaths on the walls, or even on the back of your dining chairs. You’ll have countless options in style, color and size, so experiment to find an arrangement that works for you. Complete the look with a simple everyday tablescape.

Start with an unembellished green garland or an understated table runner in a calming neutral shade. For a formal affair, elevate the aesthetic with wooden trees, ornaments, and other holiday décor. A combination of tea lights and candlesticks adds dimension for an elegant soft-lit dining experience.

When it comes to incorporating Christmas décor into your own private oasis, focus on a holiday aesthetic that feels calming and rejuvenating. For a festive yet restful bedroom, begin with a muted, natural color palette full of neutral creams, warm browns, and peaceful greens.

Add a miniature tree (or even a medium size tree if your bedroom space permits) or hang wreaths above the bed. Choose one large wreath as an eye-catching focal point or create a gallery wall with a variety of smaller wreaths.
