Holiday Haus Room Styling Guide

Updated: Nov 2

The holiday season may be the merriest time of the year, but with Christmas shopping, corporate parties and festive family events, it can also be overwhelmingly busy. So when it comes to styling my home for the holidays, the goal is always a festive look that’s as effortless as it is beautiful.

To simplify the design process, I aim for a multi-layered holiday look that can be easily adapted for a seamless post-Christmas transition. Beginning with a natural base of garland, leaves, and winter foliage, I create a seasonal foundation on which to build the rest of my holiday look. With the design foundation in place, I incorporate festive accessories and Christmas-specific design elements to play up those magical holiday vibes. And when the holidays are over, I simply remove the Christmas accessories, and am left with a cozy cabin vibe to see me through the cold winter months. This effortless design strategy is a great way to simplify your life and to slowly release the holidays as you enter into the New Year.

As the first place you (and your guests!) see when you enter your home, your entryway makes a significant impression and sets the tone for your holiday gatherings. Go big and make a statement, or keep it subtle, allowing the holiday spirit to build as you move through the home.

To highlight the natural element of the holiday, incorporate small trees in the foyer or hang garland around a centerpiece mirror. For a festive entryway focal point, try a vignette with an arrangement of Christmas décor including candles, organic elements, and a vase filled with holly. Natural, calming shades of green combined with lustrous mixed metals make for an understated yet elegant display.

The holidays tend to be the only time of year when the staircase is awarded a personality, and I love to take full advantage! To define the staircase in alignment with the entryway, begin with a base of garland and add festive accents like fairy lights, Christmas ornaments, and eye-catching ribbon.

A striking centerpiece in any room, your fireplace mantel is the perfect place for a dramatic and eye-catching Christmas display. For a lush and natural base, start with artfully draped garland and miniature pine trees. Decorative trees come in in many styles and forms, so choose a tree that fits your personal preference. Wood trees can complement both minimalistic and rustic looks, while structural or textured trees provide more visual interest. For a whimsical finishing touch that adds depth and dimension, incorporate twinkling white Christmas lights or a shimmering, light-reflecting ornament garland.

As the backdrop for the traditional Christmas feast, the dining room may be the most important room in your home when it comes to holiday décor. Many clients enjoy a festive but functional everyday base that can be easily elevated for more formal events.

Begin by hanging wreaths on the walls, or even on the back of your dining chairs. You’ll have countless options in style, color and size, so experiment to find an arrangement that works for you. Complete the look with a simple everyday tablescape.
