Balancing Functions in a Home Office

Updated: Feb 8

Often client’s need spaces to serve more than one function. For our couple Peter and Sarah, they wanted to give Sarah a home office space while not sacrificing their guest room in the process. In the initial client discussion phase of our latest home office design project, we delved into understanding the client's vision for the space. It was important to our family that guests had a space that they could relax and feel at home while they were visiting but also wanted to focus on making a functional work space for Sarah.

Focusing on the dual-use nature of the Guest Room and Sarah's Office, our priority was to create a space that seamlessly balances both functionalities. As part of the design inspiration, the overarching theme was to evoke a sense of lightness and brightness. The goal was to infuse the room with an airy ambiance, incorporating natural elements such as wood and plants. The design aimed to ground the space with cream and gray neutrals, tying into the stone feel present in the shared areas of the house. This approach ensures a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic throughout the home.

So, picture this: we wanted the home office to feel like a cozy yet functional space, where work and relaxation seamlessly blend together. To achieve this, we started by anchoring the room with a comfy futon sofa right under the window. This creates an inviting atmosphere, with plenty of natural light streaming in to brighten up the space.

Now, let's talk about those gorgeous vintage wood storage cabinets we added to the left wall. These beauties not only add a touch of charm and character to the room but also serve a practical purpose. With their glass windows, they're perfect for displaying some of your favorite books, decorative items, or family photos. Plus, they offer plenty of storage space to keep your office supplies organized or provide extra linens and towels for guests. The key was to strike a balance, ensuring the workspace harmoniously coexists with the rest of the room's functionalities. It was important to consider multi-functional storage in the space that could be used both for productivity but also keep the needs of guests in mind.

So, for the custom-built corner shelves and desk in your in-home office, we wanted to create a design that not only maximizes space but also adds a touch of elegance with a streamlined aesthetic.

First off, let's talk about the illustrations. We started by sketching out various designs to visualize how the corner shelves and desk would fit into the room. These illustrations helped us fine-tune the proportions and layout to ensure they seamlessly integrated with the existing space and matched your vision for the office. We worked closely with skilled craftsmen to meticulously craft each component, paying careful attention to detail to achieve a high-quality finish. The corner shelves were custom-built to fit snugly into the corner of the room, maximizing vertical storage space without overwhelming the area. We opted for clean lines and minimalist design elements to maintain a streamlined aesthetic that complements the overall style of the office. Overall, the custom-built corner shelves and desk were thoughtfully designed and meticulously crafted to add both functionality and visual appeal to your in-home office. They're not just pieces of furniture; they're integral components of a space designed to inspire creativity and promote efficiency in your work environment.

  1. Floor Lamp: We chose a floor lamp with delicate details to provide both uplighting and overhead light for reading. Its intricate design adds a touch of elegance to the space while ensuring functionality for tasks like reading or working at the desk.

  2. Arched Mirror: The delicate black-framed arched mirror serves multiple purposes. Not only does it provide a stylish accent, but it also offers a practical solution for guests to dress. Additionally, its reflective surface helps bounce light around the room, enhancing the overall brightness and sense of space.

  3. Office Chairs: The wood and rattan office chairs on wheels with linen-like upholstery were selected for their blend of comfort and style. The combination of natural materials and soft upholstery adds warmth to the room, while the wheels provide mobility for convenience.

  4. Curtains with Green Plants/Foliage: The curtain selection plays a crucial role in adding a calm and relaxing atmosphere to the space. Opting for curtains with green plants or foliage patterns brings a touch of nature indoors, creating a tranquil ambiance that promotes productivity and well-being.

  5. Vintage Cabinets: The black wood vintage cabinets with glass doors offer both strength and a traditional aesthetic. Their minimal lines keep the look streamlined and modern, while the glass doors provide a glimpse of the items stored inside, adding visual interest to the space.

By curating localized areas with distinct functions, our design not only enhances the room's versatility but also fosters an atmosphere of balance and purpose. Natural elements work in harmony to create a bright and airy space to work or relax. This Home Office/Guest Room combo provides our family with a multifunctional, tranquil sanctuary in their busy home.
